Lockdown, and Lee finally figures out what LDWS stands for...

Urf. I am in writing lockdown until [info]smutty_claus is done, because *draws hearts around story* but also *stabs it with a fork* a;slkjdfs.

But! Had to reappear for a moment to point out that the first-ever Harry/Scorpius Last Drabble Writer Standing competition at [info]harryscorp100 just started. Yes, I have a soft spot for Harry/Scorpius, although no, I'm not in this competition. Just an interested observer. I only recently figured out a.) what LDWS things are, and b.) how they work, so now I want everyone to do them. :)

So, there are 15 writers in it, and each week they get a prompt, and then they write a drabble (defined here as under 500 words or so, I think or, in any case, not 100 on the dot), send it in, and they are all posted anonymously mid-week. Then readers vote for their favourite, reveals happen on Sunday, and a new weekly round begins, with one less person. Fifteen weeks later, we have a winner. Fun, yes?

Maybe I'm just addicted to reality TV shows wherein voting for favourites occurs? Hm.

Anyway, I point out this week's Week One drabbles because they are all super good. The first prompt was 'Age Disparity,' so all entries have something to do with the age difference. Scorpius is underage in some but not in others, so read the warnings and go with whatever floats your boat. I had a great time over coffee the other day reading through them and trying to decide on a favourite. No, I'm not always in favour of competitive stuff in fandom, and yeah, it sucks that someone has to be eliminated every week, but hopefully all the participants are okay with that and know not to take it personally. Anyway, if it appeals to you, go have a read through over there and vote!

In other news, I just read through a super awesome story for [info]snupin_santa this morning that made me fall in love with Snupin all over again. Swoon!

*runs back to [info]smutty_claus* Hope all your holiday fest stuff is in and you lot are having a relaxing weekend!

November blogging: day 21

I've spent today trying to balance getting some much-needed rest with getting things done, although admittedly, I'm leaning more to the "getting some rest" side with the justification that I'll feel more capable of getting things done if I'm not exhausted. I'm doing laundry and washing dishes, though, and I'm planning to do a little housework before grading a few papers.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is the deadline for extensions in Snupin Santa, so there's a flood of incoming gifts this weekend. After tomorrow, I have to check the spreadsheet and see who'll be getting poked.

There really should be a drinking game for fandom fest mods. Something like...

Take one drink every time a fest participant asks for an extension.

Take one drink every time a fest participant assures you that they only need a couple of days to finish, but then you don't hear from them for a week.

Take a drink every time a fest participant disappears without warning and isn't updating their journal.

Take two drinks every time a fest participant disappears from the fest without warning but is updating their journal and is blatantly ignoring your emails and comments.

Take a drink every time you email a fest participant to remind them that they've missed the deadline and they tell you, "Oh, I can't do it. Sorry."

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in their gift with a note reading, "I didn't have time to get it beta-read/my beta was too busy".

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in their gift with a note reading, "It sucks, but I hope X likes it anyway!" Variation: they manage to slip in a passive insult of X's prompt and/or blame the suckiness of your matching skills for the quality of their gift.

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in a .jpg with their name in the file name.

Take a drink every time a fest participant asks you a question that is answered in their assignment email (and in the rules post, which you linked to in their assignment email).

Drink the whole damned bottle every time a fest participant threatens to leave fandom forever because of you.

BloMo20: Halloween....

[info - personal] osmalic asked how I celebrate Halloween.

As a kid, I generally looked forward to trick-or-treating. I did that through age 14, and then I was officially too old for it. If only I'd have known then that most people ignore the age limit!

As an adult, I've tended to hold my own birthday/Halloween party. This is the first year we've had to cancel because of illness. Sometimes, when my birthday falls in the middle of the week, a party isn't as feasible. If the weather is good, we like to set up the candy in the front yard and make the kids walk through the leaves we refuse to rake. On occasion, we've also blared scary music.

I'm not really a great decorator or costumer. I kind of enjoy clever, low-labor costumes, but I had so many "that's lame" reactions that I stopped even doing those. In my house, it's pretty much Halloween year-round in terms of decoration, and my aunt always gives me something neat that's Halloween-themed, so while I have a huge pile of Halloween stuff in basement, I hardly ever get it all out. But I could deck this place out like the Adams Family mansion if I wanted to. *grin*

I love haunted houses, although I don't get out to them every year, but they're always on my mind each year. And I celebrate Friday the 13ths as kind of adjunct holidays to Halloween. When I'm particularly vexed, I take a hex for myself on Halloween.

Probably my best birthday was last year, turning over a decade and having all my friends and family around. It was a nice night and most of my friends got good and silly in front of a fire, which was different for us, but verrrrry entertaining. Worst that I care to document was definitely this year. ~_^

November blogging: Day 20

I only have two more holiday fest stories to write, and the only thing that's keeping me from diving into writing my Yuletide story is the fact that it would look pretty bad for the mod of Snupin Santa to be a slack-ass on her own fest. It isn't that I don't like my Snupin Santa story or that I'm not inspired. I am! But somehow, the Yuletide idea has grabbed me by the proverbial throat, to the point that I've had to open a google doc and jot down some lines and ideas so I don't forget them.

The one bad thing about writing for fests is that I can't ramble about the writing process for the stories, because they're anonymous, and by the time the reveal is up and I can talk about them, I've forgotten what I wanted to say. I suppose I could write notes in google docs and post them once reveals are up, though.

I haven't worked on my Snupin Santa story in longer than I'd like, but last night, I re-read what I've got so far to refresh my memory and get the creative juices flowing again. Looking at it with a fresh eye, I really am pleased with the idea, and I'm excited about getting back to work on it. I hope I can sneak in some writing this weekend, but I'm determined to finish the papers from my 10:00 class before I reward myself with fun writing. Or with Warcraft, because OMG I'm going into withdrawal from not having time to play at all this week, and the Pilgrim's Bounty holiday is supposed to start on Sunday.

I'm feeling better today, like I'm regaining some of my equilibrium, which I attribute in part to it being Friday and having all next week off and in part to the Starbucks peppermint mocha I had this morning. Coffee, chocolate, and peppermint: perfection in a cup.

BloMo19: Screw you, Runway!....

Here are a few thoughts about Project Runway tonight:

Whoever made up Heidi in that pink must be shot. Also, she looked like she had eye work done. But I hope not.

The wrong person won.

There was a costume-heavy line. Rosy was right when she said in chat that the hats made the models look like penises.

Tim Gunn spazzing out was adorable.

I wasn't so pissed off that I won't tune in come January, but it's a close thing.

Good friend had a birthday today. We managed a small gift and short visit, and I'm glad because this friend isn't celebrated enough.

That's all I have for now. Maybe I better keep this up in December, just to get to all the topics I'm not hitting on yet.

P.S. See the Bones icon? It needs help, but I'm not sure what....

Things what I have been doing

Attended a benefit dinner last night with J, maiki, and Susan for a non-profit that we've done a lot of work for. Materials that both Susan and I had designed were all over the place and it was really nice to see it all out and looking snazzy. Susan's done a lot to get their informational materials/reports looking clean and professional. I did the benefit's programs, invites, and carried over from last year was a set of promotional posters which I'm still proud of. The project, per usual, made me gnash my teeth at times, but I do enjoy working for them, and it was flattering when people whom I didn't expect compliments from told me they were impressed by the invitations in particular. :D Leading up I had this worry about the pagination on the program booklet since I worked entirely remotely and never saw a proof (or even had time to run one myself!) but everything turned out beautifully and typo-free. By this point, I've done enough recent work to have a solid design portfolio again, so with so few classes left ahead of me it's nice to have that in addition to what's shaping up to go on my reel.

I didn't mingle much, as J and I were introduced to some great people early on and there was no incentive to bother straying away from the interesting conversation to rub elbows with people outside my industry. It was somewhat fascinating attending something like this after so long, and also after now having worked on catering from the serving end! The appetizers, by the way, were awesome. I wish we offered some of them on our own menu, especially the warm cranberries and almonds in phyllo cups. Yum.

My shoes were remarkably comfortable. I haven't worn actual heels in forever and it's nice to confirm that my knee can handle hours standing around in 3" heels.

[info]bronze_ribbons

now everything is new...

... or so the song goes. Actually, the difficulty is that life careens on no matter whether I'm paying attention or not, which means I'm nowhere near unpacked, I'll be sightsinging 11 pieces at tonight's rehearsal (and learning one by ear; the remaining two I've sung before), and I'm daunted at the necessity of getting my house company-ready by Monday.

Also, I ache all over, and I'm not sure if it's residual jetlag, residual-falling-off-a-horse-in-Jordan (I did get back on, go me), climate shock (I wore a bikini top in Tel Aviv last Saturday; today, I'm swaddled in my fleece robe and flannel nightgown, and I'm still cold), resuming my acquaintance with Tennessee Valley allergens, or if I'm succumbing to one of the many colds lurking around me (the BYM has been complaining of a scratchy throat). I better not be - I have high notes to hit! - but I've had to defer catching up with people, just in case, and that's a bummer.

Mopiness and munched-up-by-obligations-ness aside, HI! (For those of you just tuning in, I was in Israel for a month - primarily to attend a friend's wedding in Tel Aviv, but also to indulge my wanderlust while I have the legs and flextime to give it rein. There are more details and photos at my general journal.) I couldn't help but think of y'all while I was over there - there was a sushi restaurant in Jerusalem with a manga-styled girl in its ads; cartoon crustaceans on subway walls; shiny, shiny beach structures and a gorgeous library at the Israel Supreme Court, both of which made me miss marginaliana like you wouldn't believe (and so did seeing the Sesame Street stream of Google-logos (November 4-10) every time I hopped onto google.co.il to figure out buses, trains, and other logistics); and a Woodpigeon cover of "Lay All Your Love Down on Me" that had me remembering geoviki's lists.

(I have been unnaturally obsessed with that song for the past nine days - the Information Society version happened to be playing while I was at the Japonika in Haifa, and somehow rooted itself into my system before I was done with my coffee, and the plane home had the ABBA original in its database, so I ended up playing it over and over from Turkey to Quebec in tandem with dance mixes of "All Out of Love" and "Don't Leave Me This Way." It was weirdly soothing to doze to, although the teenage girl in the seat next to me probably thinks I'm a sad, sad freak. I'll just have to riff on it for My Poem Rocks or some other venue - something in my psyche wants its turn on the dancefloor...)

Um, so, yeah, lots going on, and lots more to say, but I've definitely exceeded my babble quota for the day. Plus, lunch to make and cards to send and files to edit and submissions to assemble. Speaking of the last, there are now poems scheduled to appear at Strange Horizons and Dead Mule in the near-ish future, and just a couple hours, qarrtsiluni went live with both the text and audio versions of I am waiting for the right instant to say your name. (For what it's worth, I feel this is my best reading to date of anything I've written, so I'm extra-pleased about that.)

*hugs you all, bounds off to terrorize the mailman* *eg*

It's the RETURN OF THE TO DO LIST!!!

1. Laundry

2. Shopping
- cherry pie filling
- bath scrunchy
- underroos
- turtlenecks (?)
- Christmas CD
- Kitty Litter

3. TV Setup

Oh yeah... it's a long list today XD I'm heading out to the Mall, stopping at WalMart and PetCo before heading to the Christian Bookstore. I'm singing in church in a few weeks, so I need a new holiday song, and Mom wants the three of us to sing for Christmas... which means finding a new song in an SSA arrangement. Joy.

November blogging: day 19

I'm exceedingly grateful that I'm off for Thanksgiving Break next week, because I need the time off badly to rest and catch up on grading, which has ground to a screeching halt for the time being. I've got to finish this batch of papers by November 29, though, because I'm taking up their last papers on November 30.

Things I Want to Accomplish Over Break:
- finish grading paper #3
- edit and post the rest of "Takes the Cake"
- work on Snupin Santa story
- upload Snupin Santa gifts to the archive
- put up Christmas decorations
- work on knitted Christmas gifts
- sleep a lot

FIC: "Alternatives" (Morfin Gaunt/Quirrell, Voldie/Quirrell, NC-17)

Title: "Alternatives"
Author: [info]pre_raphaelite1
Characters: Morfin Gaunt/Quirrell, Voldemort/Quirrell
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Non-con, Morfin Gaunt, Squickiness, slight crackiness? (Did you see the pairings?)
Themes/kinks chosen: Morfin Gaunt/Quirrel, castrati
Word Count: 1520
Summary: Quirrell lays in his bed at night, fidgeting. He used to sleep well, find comfort on his back in the softness of down blankets and the firmness of a good pillow and equally supportive mattress. But now he lays awake for hours, unable to deal with his own bony elbow poking into the side he has to lay on or to adjust to the soft pillow he must use now.
Author's notes: I'm sorry. Where was I supposed to go with this pairing? I mean, really? I think writing Morfin Gaunt in a fluffy romance would be far more terrifying than having him in a darker fic. Right? Right? :P

Ever since Glee 1x08 aired here, I wake up every morning and go to YT to watch Puck's cover for Sweet Caroline. I am so in love with this scene!

I wish Puck/Rachel gets more canon, but I'm not holding my breath. :(
